Steve ducks his head to hide a pleased smile at the compliment, grateful for the acknowledgment. He's doing better in his classes than he expected, and that's because he's putting in the work. Maeve helps with that, too. He was never great in school, but she's helping him be better. He's learning from her just as much as he's learning from his teachers.

"Cool." He smiles to himself as she sets the sweaty glasses down on the coasters, and then puts his plate down next to them. Instead of sitting down, he wipes his hands on his jeans and then goes over to his bag to pull out Maeve's gift. It's a mediocrely wrapped box that obviously has jewelry in it, and he's a little nervous as he comes over to sit down next to Maeve. "Here, Merry Christmas."

Inside the box are two relatively plain initial necklaces, one with an S and one with an M. His intention was for them to wear each other's, not to stake any claim on each other, but more to make a declaration, and he's a little worried that she won't like them, but it's too late now. He's already gone and done it, so he just smiles at her a bit nervously.
