Maeve wishes she was as sure as Steve of her abilities. There are plenty of things she knows she can do, areas where she excels, but she isn't convinced looking after someone is one of them. Even just trying to take care of Elsie had felt like an impossible task at times and it's why Maeve had called protective services rather than trying to take it on herself.
She would have failed her sister. Maybe not as bad as Erin was failing her, not in the same ways, but she knows she wouldn't have been able to give her the life she deserved.
It feels nice, though, knowing what Steve believes her to be capable of.
"I'm sorry I made you cry," she says with a little twist of a smile, looking up at him. She shifts on the couch, in his arms, and kisses the salty path the tear has left on his skin.
